Well, you either love tiles or you don’t, but  I can assure you that you will leave Lisbon full of admiration for what the Portuguese can do with tiles. It is a national obsession and they can be justly proud of the creativity that they have brought to this unique artistic medium.

You can see this artistry displayed everywhere, in exteriors and interiors, in private homes and public spaces. And, of course, there is a National Museum of Tile or a Museu Nacional do Azulejo. Since we have two afternoons in Lisbon, a visit would reward you with a look at some of the most beautiful tile work you’ll find anywhere.

The permanent collection tells the history of the Azulejo in Portugal from the 16th century to the present and includes a number of rooms moved here from buildings now destroyed.
