My favorite Madrid shops: Lola Fonseca

If you like Spanish theater, you shouldn’t miss a visit to the house of one of Spain’s foremost Golden Age dramatists, Félix Lope de Vega (more about this in another post).

Across the street from his house, there is a beautiful small shop/workshop belonging to Lola Fonseca, who offers a variety of items hand-painted in silk: scarves, foulards, shawls, and the most beautiful fans. Prices range from moderate to high, but the beauty is that there is never any pressure to buy. You can visit, watch her and her assistant at work, feel the fabrics and marvel at the colors and designs, all the while enjoying sampling the work of a great craftsperson at work.

They are extremely friendly, their English is serviceable, and Lola’s adorable dog Lana, is always around.

If it is a sunny day, Lana will be just outside the door enjoying the rays.
